As many of you know, team SCS is proud of our Michigan roots. While we did a lot of moaning and groaning when this past winter broke all records for cold and snow, we really are cheerleaders for the Great Lake State. From the bottom of the mitten to the top of Birch trees scattered across the UP, its a great place to call home. (BTW- “Yoopers” finally made Merriam-Webster’s dictionary! Check it out…) As we are preparing for the annual pilgrimage north to enjoy the summer on the bay and our favorite local establishments (like the Pink Pony, Sturgeon River Pottery and Mclean and Eakin Booksellers), we have been finishing up Independence Day content for many of our assisted living and home care partners. It got me to thinking…
If you’ve worked in a senior living community for even a short time, you know these communities are home to so many of our nation’s veterans. You probably also noticed how many of their children and grandchildren have served or are serving now. I thought I would take this opportunity to share a few of the resources we’ve discovered that are dedicated to supporting veterans, servicemen and their families. These might be worthwhile organizations for your assisted living communities and local home care offices to support this summer!
- Honor Flight Network – These fine folks take veterans to D.C. to visit the memorials created to honor those who served in our nation’s wars and conflicts. They do so at no cost to the veterans.
- Wounded Warrior Project – A non-profit dedicated to supporting our troops and their families as they make the transition back home. They provide a variety of support to injured servicemen and women.
- United Service Organizations (USO) – We are all familiar with this great organization. Their mission is to help lift the spirits of our troops and their families. Check out their USO Wish Book for some interesting and easy ways your local assisted living communities can help.
- Operation Gratitude and Any Soldier – Both organizations can help you connect with active duty servicemen and women. Your residents and clients can write letters, bake and send cookies and much more.
