Maybe it’s the fact that we got 8 inches of snow last weekend… Yes it is April... and we were trapped in the house when we wanted to be on the move! But I’m reacting to some of my social media pet peeves a little…peevier than usual.
It got me to thinking and asking a few of my favorite senior living colleagues how they felt about some social media practices that seem to be gaining in popularity.
The good news is… it’s not just me! People are really turned off by some very common annoyances.
Want to make sure you aren’t annoying the very people you are trying to cultivate and impress on your social channels?
Here’s what some of my senior living colleagues said were their biggest social media pet peeves.
Top 10 Social Media Pet Peeves and the Senior Living Industry
So here we go…
- You follow me on Twitter…and have a note in your profile that says I have 72 hours to follow you back or you will Unfollow me. Or you follow me but have a profile that says don’t DM you. Seriously? Ain’t nobody of quality gonna follow you with ‘tude like that going on.
- Twitter DMs… I know people think it helps them connect to new followers but you know what most people think DMs on Twitter really are? Spam.
- LinkedIn…Or as many of my senior living colleagues are calling it these days…the new Facebook. Stop with the prayers and the politics peeps! This is a professional network. In case your mamma didn’t teach you this… politics and religion… just not cool in the workplace. I get personality – Lord knows our crew has it – and we know controversy invites comment… But this is NOT the right kind of controversy. Just don’t. No politics. No religion.
- More LinkedIn Grumbles… I really did get an earful about LinkedIn… Two primary ones being: Don’t endorse me like you know me if you don’t…and don’t immediately spam me if I do accept your request. I might accept your request because you look like a good resource, but a straight outta the gate pitch? Colleagues told me they immediately block folks who immediately spam them.
- On any channel… Don’t tag us on posts and updates that have nothing to do with us. Ugh. It really annoys people. We see your game plan and we ignore you. Get a real strategy.
- Click bait titles… We’ve talked about this one many times, but it still makes the list. Don’t try trickery to get me to click on your link. Content must match the title or I won’t make the mistake of clicking again. Period. Done.
- Social media is a conversation… It’s not all about you. Don’t just schedule a bunch of posts ahead of time and then never engage or interact with commenters. And don’t make everything about you. Share others posts and be a good friend/neighbor.
- Over hash tagged… It was bad enough on Twitter, but now over hash tagging has become an issue on Instagram and Facebook. Learn more about hash tags so you can use them well.
- Oversharing… do I even need to say more? I don’t think so.
Say NO to Selfies on Senior Living Social Media Pages
And finally… the last one…#10… constant selfies. This was the one that blew the lid off our survey!
Despite what the Kardashian crew will tell you, normal people are seriously annoyed by people who post selfies of every… step… they take… all… day… long on their personal and business pages.
The rule of thumb to remember… relevant photos and images help your engagement… bathroom selfies, mirror selfies, half nude or fully Monty selfies? Just stop.
Thanks to our senior living colleagues who played along and shared what really hacks them off on social media!
