A clear case for senior living editors…
One of our clients sent us a copy of the e-newsletter above last month. They used to be a client of one of our competitors and still receive their e-newsletters. A leading reason they dropped the agency was lack of editing skills.
Editing senior living content is a constant battle, for sure.
We have four super fabulous editors who seem to take a little too much joy in pointing out all of our writers’ mistakes.
But they largely help us avoid embarrassing mistakes like the one in the photo above.
If you are struggling to figure out what your editing process should be, you might appreciate a behind-the-scenes peek at ours.
Editing Senior Living Content
- Establish brand standards/style guidelines/rules for writers: Whatever you want to call them (and we’ve seen all sorts of fun names), you need to decide what your brand standards are. What style you want your writers and editors to follow is up to you, as long as you are consistent. Here at SCCS, we created a very unique set of guidelines. They are proven techniques for gaining traffic, connecting with families, and keeping visitors on the client’s site longer. While we break a lot of traditional writing rules, we are consistent in doing so.
- Review for industry relevance and jargon: The first pass we make through every single article written on a client’s behalf is where we make sure we are giving families correct information AND avoiding senior living jargon. Unless a client’s SEO team insists on it, we avoid words and phrases like “facility” and “elderly” and “placed in a home.” We explain what an ADL is and who a DON is and don’t leave families confused by jargon.
- Two-step editing: Once we’ve made sure the content is relevant and jargon-free, it goes through two rounds of editing by two different editors. This helps us eliminate typos, grammatical errors, and embarrassing spell check misses.
