We are seeing a lot of folks trying to rank for some crazy keywords lately…
While it’s great that your senior living site is ranking well, what’s not so great is if you are spending money to rank well for keywords that just. don’t. matter.
Sometimes we run in to this when an assisted living or memory care provider hires a content mill to create articles and guides for them.
Because the content mill doesn’t understand our industry, they get way off track.
They’ll find a few keywords and phrases that aren’t as competitive and create loads of content around them. The catch is those keywords aren’t relevant.
What does that gain you? Unfortunately, not much.
It’s the difference between ranking for Medicare and Medicaid. Almost all older adults have questions about Medicare at some point. Positioning your community as Medicare experts can open a conversation that puts you on a senior’s radar.
By contrast, if you don’t accept Medicaid waivers, do you really want to be spending money generating leads from families who need to find a Medicaid waiver community? Nope. It’s a waste of time for them and for your team.
While keywords have gotten a bad rap because of the way consultants have misused them over the years, if you use them strategically, they will bring families searching for senior living to you.
What Are Senior Living Keywords?
In SEO terms, senior living keywords are the words and phrases that older adults and their families are entering in to search boxes on Google and other search engines.
The goal with the senior living content you create is to use keywords that drive organic traffic to your website.
It’s important to rank well for the standard keywords in our industry, such as memory care, assisted living, senior living, and independent living. But it’s also important to rank well for key phrases too. They are kind of the road less traveled…
Long-tail keywords can really up your senior living content game.
Think about some of the questions families ask you during their first few calls. And after you’ve talked a few times. Then those that pop up when they are almost ready to make a move.
More than likely, you can come up with some really great long-tail keywords just by doing what you do every day: talking to older adults and their families.

Before you approve a senior living content marketing topic, think about what type of reader that topic is likely to generate. Is it one that is relevant? That’s really the bottom line.
