This week’s blog post is compliments of the SCCS editing crew…
It’s in response to a question we often receive… what editing tools do you recommend?
We know a lot of our clients write short, stories and community invites for their blog and news rooms. They are usually just a paragraph or two written in a rush.
But it’s important to make sure you are inviting the community to a public event and not a pubic event is important. (Yep, that happened!)
Without further ado, here are a few editing tools and tips to try in no particular order or format.
Editing Tools for Senior Living Marketing Teams
Online Editing Tools
- Merriam-Webster online dictionary – for obvious reasons, right?
- Google Books Ngram Viewer – lets you track trends in spelling. So if a word has multiple variations, you can see which is most commonly used.
- Title Capitalization Tool – shows you how to capitalize titles in 6 different style guides.
- Grammar Girl – explains grammar issues in a way that’s easy to understand.
- The National Center on Disability and Journalism’s Disability Language Style Guide – lists preferred language to describe disabilities and those living with disabilities.
-
PerfectIt – consistency checker and an editor favorite!
-
The Chicago Manual of Style Online – you can use the search function even if you don’t have a subscription.
-
English-Corpora.org – has links to several widely used online corpora
Books our Editors Recommend
- Garner’s Modern English Usal (4th) by Brian Garner
- The McGraw-Hill Handbook of English Grammar and Usage
- The Copyeditor’s Handbook (4th) by Amy Einsohn and Marilyn Schwartz
- The Best Punctuation Book, Period
Hopefully this helps you avoid embarrassing mistakes in your online platforms…
Until next time,
