Every now and again we like to give our trusty band of content editors a nice shout out.
Their job isn’t an easy one. Writers can be <big gasp here> somewhat temperamental and tough to work with. Deadlines are almost always tight, no matter how carefully we plan. Clients often have their own ideas on style and grammar that aren’t…how shall I put this…always accurate.
Our content editors walk a fine line between turning out great work, and keeping people happy.
It can make for tricky, somewhat stressful days.
So what does a day in the life of a content editor look like? What skills make for a great editor?
Here’s a quick look at what our crew tackles on any given day.
What Content Editors Really Do
The juggling act our editors perform each day includes:
- Reviewing and updating client maps: Looking for opportunities to tackle articles we haven’t written about before or a new angle for an evergreen topic. Every SCCS client has their own content map. It’s a fluid process we have down to a science.
- Crafting balanced editorial calendars: Most of our clients rely on us to develop a solid content marketing strategy. They know we make sure each piece of content we create has a purpose. Our editors are constantly reviewing and revising that strategy based on what’s working, and what isn’t. It’s one of the most important parts of the job.
- Carving up writers work: So that’s how writers interpret editors job. Carving up the work a writer crafts, and sometimes sending it back loaded with red digital ink. They look for style, voice, grammar, and opportunities to polish and perfect content.
- Plotting and planning: Our schedule is an exceptionally busy one. While the COVID-19 pandemic has us all working virtually, we still maintain an assignment board in the office. The editors are the ones who juggle projects around so we can fit everything in during the week and month. We work hard to be able to accommodate rush articles for clients, and the editors are the ones who make that possible.
What Style Guidelines Do SCCS Content Editors Use
The Senior Care Content Specialists is fortunate to have a great group of editors.
Over the years, they’ve helped us create our unique voice and style.
That’s important to clients in a variety of ways.
Our knowledge of senior living combined with SEO allows our clients’ content perform well. You’ll find articles and content we’ve written at the top of the search engine results pages on a regular basis.
Equally important, our editors help prevent embarrassing typos and misinformation from being published on your site.
We are often asked what style guidelines we follow. That’s a tricky one to answer.
Because people read differently online than off, we’ve kind of invented our own.
Unless a client has their own brand standards, our editors mix a little Chicago style with a modest amount of AP Style.
Then we sprinkle in the best practices we know work. Proven methods of connecting and engaging with seniors and their families.
And guess what?
Our editing services are open to everyone, even if we don’t create the content.
If you’d like to learn more, shoot us a quick note. We’ll be happy to set up a time to talk about it!
Until next time,
