It’s tempting to write articles on topics beyond the scope of your senior living audience, especially if you’ve had a blog up and running for a while.
Instead of creating blog articles you know drive SEO and engage seniors and their families, you might want to jump on the latest trending headlines.
Like how in the world does Pete Davidson date so many A-list celebrities? Or why is Elon Musk really trying to buy Twitter? Both are trending topics as we get this post ready to schedule for publication.
Sure those are much more fun than trying to find a new angle to write about the questions to ask on an assisted living tour or why aging in place in a mortgage-free home might not be a cost-effective solution after all.
In the industry, we call them off-topic blog posts.
Will you get any juice from news jacking topics totally unrelated to senior care or aging services?
Blog Posts for Senior Living
According to John Mueller, Google’s search guru, the answer is No. Writing about topics unrelated to what your audience is searching for doesn’t help.
What you can do, however, is tie industry relevant information to a trending topic.
Here’s what we mean by that…
Depending upon what type of senior care or aging services provider you are, you’ll likely find some interesting ways to present a topic.
For example, the actor Bruce Willis recently shared his aphasia diagnosis. We all know that’s a condition that impacts many older adults. But it’s not a term people outside of health care related industries are generally familiar with.
So, we used the Willis headline in a story talking about that condition. What might cause aphasia, who usually develops it, how it impacts quality of life, and so on.
When the beloved actor and comedian Robin Williams died by suicide it was revealed that he had Lewy Body Dementia. His death was devastating to many. We used the opportunity to create blogs for clients that educated the public on this awful disease.
We also tied it back to memory care services and how that type of support helps the person with Lewy Body, as well as their loved ones.
The bottom line is that by looking at headlines a little differently, you can find unique ways to talk about what you do and the services you offer.
All without going crazy off-topic and confusing your faithful followers.
Make sense?
