Once again this holiday season, SCCS has donated to the Mucinous Ovarian Cancer Coalition (MOCC) in honor of our clients. It’s an organization that each of us personally support.
If you are new to us since last year’s contribution, please take 2 minutes to learn more about this inspiring, 501(c)(3) organization.
When Ovarian Cancer Strikes Women Young
In the fall of 2019, our founder’s young and vivacious sister, Rhonda, went to the doctor for yearly bloodwork. Within hours, she would learn something was off.
Fast forward several weeks when the diagnosis would turn out to be a rare form of ovarian cancer. One that not many oncologists have experience treating.
Her disease was advanced and ferocious. Added to that, Rhonda experienced every potential complication and side effect of treatment along the way.
Instead of feeling sorry for herself, however, Rhonda chose to help other women.
She saw women with the disease struggling financially and emotionally, and wanted to change that and offer them support.
MOCC was born.
It is the only organization worldwide dedicated to this rare form of ovarian cancer that strikes younger women. A considerable number of the women the organization supports are in their 20s and 30s, including some whose disease was discovered during pregnancy.
Sadly for us, Rhonda’s personal battle would end six weeks after the nonprofit was launched. Just one year after her diagnosis.
The Fight Against Mucinous Ovarian Cancer Continues
Those who loved Rhonda continue the fight in her honor. The organization continues to grow and reach more women and families. A few of this young organization’s accomplishments include:
- Awarding a yearly research grant of up to $50,000. Called Rhonda’s Award, it’s open to scientists around the world.
- Offering free one-on-one virtual counseling to women and their families.
- Sending MOCC Cares packages to women undergoing treatment or recovering from surgery.
- Creating a website with a resource center of information specific to this disease. The only one of it’s kind.
- Assembling a world-class advisory board and a group of GYN oncologists who provide second opinions, including virtually.
- Being named a top-rated nonprofit both years since launch by Great Nonprofits.
While we’ve made a contribution in honor of our wonderful clients, we hope you will help spread the word, too.
Share this article or our Facebook page. Make a donation in memory or honor of someone you love or a colleague/boss that’s tough to buy for.
The only way we beat this disease and keep other families from the profound grief that comes from saying good-bye far to soon, is through research.
Join us in the fight by donating here.
Best wishes for a safe and joyous holiday season!
